The cover of this book says: TO REVEAL THE SCIENTIFIC FACTS BEHIND THE ACT OF SALAT.
I bought this book early this year and finished reading about a month later. I was astounded when I read the book. All this while I know that as Muslim, solat is one of the five pillars in Islam. The second of five. It is obligatory for Muslims to perform Solat five time per day. I knew deep inside that everything that Allah instructs us to do, there must be something good behind it, more on spiritual value. Scientifically, I just knew that the act of prostrating and praying in congregation can give the positive effect on us, but that little knowledge is restricted to what I heard from one kuliah Maghrib quite some time ago. That was all.
The book describes that solat is more than just the movement of the whole body such as tai-chi (and the likes) because solat involves the recitation of Quranic verses and supplications (du'a) as well. These Quranic verses and du'as must be verbalised when the worshipper assumes certain postures and performs movements between postures.
The main postures during the solat are standing (qiyam), bowing (ruku'), prostrating (sajdah), and sitting during salutation (tahiyat).
I am not going into details of how the worshipper should stand, bow or prostrate and so on. If you are interested to know more about it, use the search engine, please (but the book did explain all about them). This review might sound "too technical" to some of you but if you get to read the whole book, you won't get lost.
Six factors that being studied in the book were:
a) Effects of solat and fasting on body composition;
b) deals with heart rate;
c) deals with low back pain;
d) on the brain;
e) talks about muscle activities;
f) the effects of salat on erectile dysfunction! yup!!!
Body composition
The body composition refers to active tissue, bone tissue, water component and fat.
Methods that were used to measure the body composition are:
- Using calipers
- Body Mass Index measurement
- Circumference measurement
- Water weighing measurement
- Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) measurement
- Bioimpedance analysis measurement
There are also certain parameters being used as indicator of body health which I am not going to list here.
So, to study the effect of the solat on body compostion, the researchers have set five conditions/etiquette that must be fulfilled during the study:
1) An individual's adherence to the full five solats;
2) An individual's understanding of the salat verses;
3) Congregational or non-congregational solat;
4) Back posture bowing, 90 degree angle or otherwise;
5) Position of toes, whether toes are bent or otherwise during prostration and when sitting between prostrations and during the final salutation.
I think this is very detail!
Conclusion:
1. The first study found that a person can achieve the highest level of health possible and indeed exceed optimum health level (with five good pratices as mentioned above is fulfilled). The body will be able to build up and sustain a good immune system and become more healthier and energetic. This will protect the body against various mental and physical illnesses (orang yang menjaga solat tidak nyanyuk walaupun dah tua pikun);
2. Solat also helps to reduce fat in the body thus forming up the muscle tissue. Increasing of active muscle tissue means delaying the aging process and the loss of inelasticity of muscle tissue (no wonder orang banyak solat tu awet muda kan?)
3. The practice of performing bowing at 90-degree angle will increase the intracellular water value in the body thus reducing discomfort from arthritis, low back pain and backache (so, ruku' tu biar betul-betul 90-darjah!);
4. The practice of bending the toes during prostration and sitting helps to increase the burning of fats and remove it from the body, thus reducing the risk of heart disease! (wahhhh, dahsyat solat ni kan? bengkok kan jari pun ada significant effect!)
5. The second study combined fasting with tarawih prayers. It has been proven that 140 minutes a week of that has the same effect of 150 minutes of exercise per week combined with a balanced diet.
Fasting and tarawih increase muscle activity, reduce fat deposits in arteries and veins -----> blood vessels will become more elastic. Also significantly reducing the glucose level. (kalau lepas tarawih pulun "morei" beriya-iya tak jadi jugak kot, tak apa lepas tu buat qiamullail!!!)
That was one factor, another 5 to go!!!! I am already tired of typing!! So can you see what's the benefit of solat now?
Briefly. the benefits of prostration in solat is that the head is at the lowest thus lowering distance between the heart and the gravity thus reducing the heart rate. (Jantung paling relax bila kita sujud sebab dia pam darah bukan melawan tarikan graviti). More blood will flow to the brain allowing the walls and nerves of the brain receive more blood and oxygen than usual. Brain is healthier and more energized (Itulah hikmah solat Subuh setiap pagi, kita keluar kerja dengan fikiran yang lapang dan tenang, tambah lagi kalau boleh solat Isyra' dan Solat Dhuha pulak later on so much better! Berapa ramai orang yang sebelum membuat keputusan yang besar-besar menunaikan solat sunat terlebih dahulu?)
Even the tuma'ninah in the solat has significant effect on the brain because the state of calmness was at its maximum during tuma'ninah. This is beneficial in maintaining the mental and emotional stabitility of and individual. It also increases concentration and brain power making a person more receptive and ready for challenges (kalau kita solat macam "ayam patuk padi" tu tak adalah maknanya kan?)
So now, you've got to read the whole book to know what else stores for you. This book is highly recommended so that hopefully in knowing this, it will motivate the Muslims to perform the solat more dilligently and orderly in order to derive spritual, physical, and mental benefits. It will also help you to answer some questions perhaps thrown to you by your non-muslim friends who normally clueless of why we have to bow, prostrate and so on in our prayers. Clearly, this book should not be missed!
